ALEKS PPL and MTH 105L required lab
MTH 105L is now a required co-requisite of MTH 111: every MTH 111 student must enroll in a section of MTH 105L.*
First 105L meeting: you will take a proctored ALEKS PPL assessment (just like the practice assessment you took over the summer). A score of at least 80 on this assessment will immediately earn you a PASS for MTH 105L. In this case, you will not need to attend any more 105L meetings.
If you score below 80 on your first proctored assessment, you will continue to attend weekly MTH 105L lab sessions. In the sessions, you will work on problems that help you succeed in MTH 111. You will also work in the ALEKS PPL learning modules on your own outside of class. Both of these activities will earn you points towards passing MTH 105L.
Fourth class meeting of MTH 105L: you will have a second opportunity to take a proctored ALEKS PPL assessment. If you reach 80 during this attempt, you are done with MTH 105L. If not, you will continue to attend 105L lab meetings weekly.
* This new requirement gives structure and course credit to the work that MTH 111 students are already required to do; it does not add more work to MTH 111.
Recommended pathways for
MTH 111 credit.
If you reach* a goal score of 80 before the semester starts
1. One semester pathway: Take MTH 111 calculus (4 credits; letter grade) with required lab course (MTH 105L - 1 credit pass/fail for work in ALEKS PPL).
If your score is below 80 at the start of the semester, consider:
2. [FALL ONLY, invitation only] One year pathway MTH 106: Fall MTH 106 calculus part 1 (3 credit; letter grade) + Spring MTH 111** calculus part 2 (4 credits; letter grade). If you received an invitation for MTH 106, submit a "prerequisite override request" in WorkDay to enroll in MTH 106.
3. One year pathway MTH 104: Fall MTH 104 prep for calculus (2 credits pass/fail) + Spring MTH 111 calculus (4 credits; letter grade). Submit a "prerequisite override request" in WorkDay to enroll in MTH 104.
*If you have not quite reached the qualifying score by the start of the semester, you can still stay enrolled in MTH 111. The score of 80 indicates good preparation for calculus. Every MTH 111 student has to sign up for MTH 105L.
**there is a designated section of MTH 111 in the spring for students coming from MTH 106.
MTH 106 is a 3-credit hour course that integrates calculus with pre-calculus (letter grade). It meets three times a week for 50 minutes.
MTH 104 is a 2-credit hour pass/fail class. Students work in ALEKS PPL throughout the semester. It meets one time a week for 110 minutes. This is a good option for students who are feeling very hesitant about calculus and whose ALEKS PPL score is below 50.
MTH 105L lab course is a 1-credit hour asynchronous required pass/fail lab that gives course credit for work done in ALEKS PPL. It is mandatory for MTH 111 students and it cannot be taken without MTH 111.
FAQ
Q: When can I start ALEKS PPL? A: Start NOW!
Q: How will I be notified? A: Depending on your score we may notify you over email about extra supports for MTH 111.
Q: If I don't earn an 80 by the start of the semester, can I still stay enrolled in MTH 111? A: Yes.
Q: How many chances do I have on ALEKS assessments? A: You may take up to 3 unproctored assessments and 2 proctored assessments.
Q: When will my proctored assessments take place? A: Your proctored assessments will take place during your first and fourth MTH 105L sessions. (Thurs. August 29 and Sept. 19).
Q: If I pass the assessment, do I have to keep coming to 105L? A: No. If you earn a score of at least 80 on your proctored assessment, then you are done with 105L. This is all the more reason to practice in ALEKS PPL over the summer!!
Q: If I don't have to keep coming, do I still get the 1 credit for 105L? A: Yes. To earn credit for MTH 105L, you only need to attain a score of at least 80 on a proctored assessment. If you aren't able to attain that score, you can continue to attend sessions to earn the credit.
Q: I earned at least an 80 on an assessment I took at home. Am I done with ALEKS and 105L? A: No. Everyone enrolled in MTH 111 + MTH 105L must take a proctored assessment and every MTH 111 student must enroll in MTH 105L.
Q: I don't know which math class I should take at WFU. Will my ALEKS score determine this? A: Not really. Talk with an academic advisor to see if you should take MTH 111 or something else. It all depends on what major you are aiming for. undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu We do use ALEKS scores to invite some students to MTH 104 and MTH 106.
Q: Where are the learning modules? A: They are within ALEKS PPL. After you take your first assessment in ALEKS PPL, it will provide you with learning modules customized to what you got wrong on the assessment.
Q: Is MTH 105L a prerequisite for MTH 111? A: No. MTH 105L is a lab that you take at the same time as MTH 111.
Q: I need help with registering for MTH 111 and/or MTH 105L. A: Contact registrar@wfu.edu and/or undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu
What is MTH 111?
