Ms. Marks' Music

Learning Resources for Elementary Music

Welcome to my music website! This website will contain numerous resources for my Fifth Grade Choir and K-5 Classroom Music Students to Practice both at school and at home.

"Choral music is not one of life's frills. It is something that goes to the very heart of our humanity, our sense of community and our souls. You express when you sing your soul in song; and when you get together with a group of other singers, it becomes more than the sum of all the parts. All those people are pouring out their hearts and souls in perfect harmony, which is kind of an emblem for what we need in this world when so much of the world is at odds with itself; that just to express in symbolic terms what it's like when human beings are in harmony. That's a lesson for our times and for all time."  -John Rutter

"While listening to music engages the brain in some pretty interesting activities, performing music is the brain's equivalent of a full-body workout. Singing and/or playing an instrument engages practically every area of the brain at once, especially the visual, auditory and motor corticies. As with any other workout, disciplined, structured practice in playing music strengthens those brain functions, allowing us to apply that strength to other activities." -Anita Collins

"There are so many good things about choral music, that's it's kind of stunning that it's not required in educational situations. In an ensemble, you learn compassion, you learn empathy, you learn discipline, you learn languages, you learn history, you learn focus. All of these things that are essential for every other part of your life, every one of the letters in STEM you learn in ensemble music making... this is the core of who we are and what we need to be." - Eric Whitacre

Did you know? Musical training helps develop language and reasoning skills. It also helps develop a mastery of memorization, while students learn how to improve and revise their work. Musical training helps with creative thinking, coordination, auditory skills, emotional development, imagination, intellectual curiosity, discipline, teamwork, self-confidence, spatial intelligence, pattern recognition and so much more! Read the NAFME article below to learn more about how music education benefits overall intelligence.

It is no longer a probability; Neuroscience research now proves that music training builds the bridges and pathways in the brain faster than any other activity known to humankind.

If you care, as much as I do, about the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of our children, then become a vocal advocate for music education.
