The trout we raised this year are Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). This type of trout is also called mountain trout or speckled trout. Brook trout is the only trout species that is native to Virginia. This means that this type of trout is the only one naturally found in this state and has not been brought here and released. This trout is 80% of the wild trout population in Virginia!
We took the trout to release them at Graves Mountain Recreational Area. The trout traveled there in our high-tech, super official Home Depot bucket. Fish breathe through their gills. This allows them to get oxygen out of the water. To make sure they had enough oxygen in the water for the trip, we used a battery-powered aerator. This makes bubbles and puts oxygen into the water. In the picture to the right at the top, it is the tube with the white thing on the end that looks like a marshmallow.
When we got to the creek, we slowly released them into their new home! Check out more pictures and videos below!
