Who doesn't want a sweet start to their week? Today you are going to make your own rock candy with materials that you have at home. You must reach back into your memory bank to be able to follow the scientific method to complete the activity. This is a multi-day activity so be sure to check in each day to make your observations.
6" wood skewers or string
Pint-Sized Wide-Mouth Mason Jars or glasses
Candy Flavoring, optional
Warm Water
1) Gather your materials
2) Tie a piece of string that measures 2 inches above your jar to the bottom of the jar and tie to the pencil
3) Fill your glass jar with 1 cup boiling water, Water will be provided for you by your teacher.
4) Start adding your sugar, one spoonful at a time. Keep adding sugar until it starts to accumulate at the bottom of the container and won’t dissolve even with more stirring. This means your solution is saturated. You need a saturated solution for your crystals to grow quickly.
5) Place a small piece of paper over the top of your jar. Take a piece small enough to just cover the top of you container and cut a line in the paper to slide your string through. This will prevent any foreign objects from getting in your jar.
6) Check on you crystals everyday for a week. Note your observations in the Google Form below.
