What is the difference between the Transition to WHS course and the summertime freshmen orientation?

The student-led WHS orientation is a one-day session at the end of the summer. Incoming freshmen will meet WHS administrators and learn about their new school. WHS seniors will give a tour of WHS to 9th graders and students new to WHS. Students will learn about different clubs, sports, and activities. On orientation day, staff will be in the building, so students may be able to meet some of their teachers that day. Almost all 9th graders attend this orientation.

The Transition to WHS course is a one-day session (three hours long) led by WHS teacher, Mr. Carr. During this course, students will:

  • take smaller, more personalized tours (academic classrooms and other areas of the building and grounds)

  • walk a typical schedule

  • compare and contrast SDMS/middle school to WHS

  • compare/contrast underclassmen to upperclassmen

  • get a better understanding of credits

  • receive information about the class advisor

  • meet and greet with athletics and administration

  • learn about support staff including your guidance counselor and what to expect during your freshman interview

  • have a Google Classroom of resources to walk away with
