Driver's Ed teaches you the basics of the road, and at the end of the course, you will take a written exam to demonstrate your knowledge. The road test is through the DMV, not the course, which is what allows you to physically be on the road.
A permit is NOT a license and you must have an adult with you in the front passenger seat who has a valid license.
The course costs around $130, but may vary depending on year and program.
