Preschool Program

Philosophy

West Warwick Preschool Program serves children from many different family backgrounds, reflecting different socioeconomic levels and various heritages in culture and language. Our aim is to provide a safe, nurturing, stimulating environment that accommodates and embraces differences for all young children living in West Warwick. The preschool programs in West Warwick are designed to meet the needs of all children. The majority of our children have been determined to have delays in one or more of the following areas: speech/language & communication, pre-academics, social emotional, self help skills, gross motor, fine motor, and/or health care needs.

Placement Options

The West Warwick Public Schools Preschools follow the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) requirements. These requirements state the IDEA's strong preference for educating students with disabilities in regular classes with appropriate aids and supports. Under section 612(a)(5) of the IDEA, to the maximum extent appropriate, children with disabilities, including children in public or private institutions or other care facilities, must be educated with children who are not disabled. Further, special classes, separate classes, separate schooling, or other removal of children with disabilities from the regular educational environment may occur only when the nature or severity of the disability of the child is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily.

The West Warwick public schools offers a continuum of services for preschool students identified as having a disability.

Itinerant Early Childhood Special Education (IECSE) is a research-based service delivery model for providing special education services to young children with disabilities within general early childhood environments.

The IECSE model allows young children with disabilities to actively participate in the general education curriculum by embedding the necessary supports, services, and interventions. Participating early childhood programs in the community are partnered with West Warwick public schools  to implement this model successfully.
