For this project, my goal is to bring awareness to the risks marine life face from the pollution we cause. I thought that it would be a good idea to use mediums I've never used before to create a more visual, 3D, and eye-catching piece that will hopefully bring about awareness more effectively. I gained inspiration from my memories of going whale watching and how I wish to help make the oceans cleaner. I started by bending some cardboard into a shape of a whale breaching. I then covered the cardboard sculpture with a paper mache-like material to smooth out the creases in the cardboard. I then covered it in black gesso, and painted it over with acrylic paint, with a more pixelated style. As for the background, I painted a sunset at the ocean and created waves using modeling paste to give the waves a more realistic, eye-catching look to them. The plastic wrapping around the whale is saran wrap, symbolizing the pollution that marine life struggles to live with.
