Design instruction that interconnects content areas
Because literacy skills like speaking, listening, reading, and writing are applicable across all disciplines, English is a subject that lends itself particularly well to interdisciplinary connections. For example, when introducing a new class text like Persepolis, I build in time for students to consider the historical and cultural context of the reading. This widens their general knowledge base and engages them in higher order-thinking tasks by helping them form meaningful associations across subjects.
Provide opportunities for students to understand and advocate for their individual learning needs
For each written assessment, I make room for students to meet with me individually. During these 1 on 1 conferences, the student has my undivided attention as they seek personalized feedback and support. As seen above, I also circulate frequently during independent work. I approach table groups to foster accountability, offer encouragement, answer questions.
Use digital tools to promote digital literacy and multiple means to demonstrate their learning
This is a sample of a student's final research project from English 10. For their topic, students were given the freedom to select any pressing issue they thought was worth addressing or learning more about. She has crafted an aesthetically pleasing Google Slides presentation to display her findings on the ecological impacts of deforestation. On slide 8, this student has created a Google survey to poll others about her research topic, employing digital literacy to obtain data from her local community.
