History of Ranum

Ranum High School opened in the fall of 1962 to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding community.

The school, with the nickname Raiders, was named after legendary educator and superintendent Iver Ranum who began teaching in the district in 1935 and was named superintendent in 1950.

Federick Jarigese served as the school’s first principal providing steady, loving leadership for more than a decade.

During the years that followed, Ranum High School became an athletic powerhouse while developing an intense rivalry with nearby Westminster High School.

In September of 2010, with the opening of a state-of-the-art Westminster High School, Ranum High School transitioned to a middle school serving students grades 6 through 8.

The school adopted the Knights as the school nickname, embracing purple and gold as the school colors.
