Students that are identified as gifted with Superior Cognitive Abilities, Creative Thinking Abilities, and/or Specific Academic Abilities start with cluster grouping and differentiation in their general education classrooms. At the elementary level, the district Gifted Intervention Specialist (GIS) shares weekly challenge/enrichment questions in both math and reading with the regular education teachers to give to their gifted identified students, and organizes two Math Academic Competitions and one Independent Writing project each year.
The regular education teachers and the GIS work together as the GIS provides general education classroom teachers ongoing professional development, materials/resources, and ideas for providing differentiation in the classrooms. The GIS guides the regular education teachers through the documentation of goals for their gifted students.
District services include opportunities of acceleration, the highest form of service, throughout upper elementary to high school. Acceleration in the area of math starts as early as 4th grade. Science acceleration begins in 6th grade, and most all other academic areas offer advanced and accelerated options in high school.
