West Geauga Gifted Program

Hello, I am Mrs. Carrie Morgano - the district's Gifted Coordinator and Enrichment Specialist. To reach me with questions or concerns, please email me at carrie.morgano@westg.org . As required by the state of Ohio, we identify students as Gifted in the areas of Superior Cognitive, Specific Academic Ability: Math and/or Reading and Creativity.

IDENTIFICATION OF GIFTED STUDENTS

Superior Cognitive

In second and fourth grade, all students are screened for giftedness in the area of Superior Cognitive, using the CogAT test. To be identified in this area, students must earn a standard age score (SAS) of 128 or higher. Students who score in the 124-127 range on the CogAT will be assessed using the InView test, and must earn a standard age score (SAS) of 128 or higher on this test.

Parents and teachers of students who have been identified as Superior Cognitive will receive notification regarding the identification. These students will have a written educational goal in an area of strength on their Written Education Plan (WEP).

Specific Academic Ability

During the fall, winter, and spring of each year in grades 2-8, students are screened and assessed for giftedness in the area of Specific Academic Ability for Math and Reading, using the MAP tests. In order to be identified as gifted in Math or Reading, a student must earn a national percentile ranking of 95% or higher on the test one time.

Parents and teachers of students who have been identified as Specific Academic Ability will receive notification regarding the identification. Students who have been identified will be clustered in classrooms with at least one other student identified in the same area. These students will receive a written education plan (WEP), with an educational goal(s) in an area of strength, and services will be delivered by the teacher in the area of their identification. Gifted service for these students could include differentiation in the regular classroom, honors classes, accelerated courses,  AP classes, and/or post-secondary classes. Progress on these goals will be monitored through the course of the year and feedback will be given to the parents on the student's progress at the end of the first and second semesters.

Creative Thinking

Second and fourth grade students, who earn a score of 112 or higher on the CogAt test, are screened for creativity with the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT). In order to be identified in Creative Thinking, a student must earn a national percentile ranking of 95% or higher, based on their age. Identification letters will be sent home to parents of students who have been identified, and service can be provided in multiple ways for this type of identification. Services may include but are not limited to some of the following examples: Fine Arts (music, band, arts), theater/drama programs, STEM classes, yearbook classes, creative writing challenges, and creative elective courses.
