The Intermediate Science and Technology Education Curriculum at Westfield is designed to expand upon students' foundational knowledge from elementary school and prepare them for advanced studies at Westfield High School. In grades 6 - 8, students explore a diverse array of topics in Life Science, Earth & Space Science, and Physical Science, adhering to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science and the Next Generation Science Standards.
In addition to this robust science curriculum, students in grades 6 and 7 engage in quarterly technology electives centered around the engineering design process. These electives are crafted to enhance their problem-solving and critical thinking skills through practical, hands-on projects. By grade 8, students have the opportunity to delve deeper into technology education by choosing a semester-long elective in either robotics or advanced design, allowing them to apply their scientific knowledge to real-world technological challenges.
The foundational resource for our curriculum is OpenSciEd, which has been adopted by the NJ Department of Education as the official Model Curriculum resource, ensuring a comprehensive and dynamic learning experience. Additional information about OpenSciEd is linked below.
