From an early age, pupils are inspired to write creatively, and have their work showcased on 'Exciting Writing' walls in every classroom across the school.
Pupils in KS1 & KS2 complete 'cold tasks' at the beginning of a new unit/genre and a 'hot task' at the end, to show the progress made within each unit of work. Opportunities to use these styles of writing across the curriculum are planned for, and are called 'warm tasks' - enabling pupils to continually practice learned skills.
Classroom Hotboards:
Hotboards support pupil learning, as they are engaging and interactive working walls (as opposed to static 'traditional' classroom displays). Westerings is a pioneer school for the use of Hotboards.
From our Literacy lead, Mrs Woods, on how we sequence learning in 'Spellings' at WPA:
Learning is sequenced in the LCP Letters and Sounds scheme that we use for our Early Years team. In Year 1 and 2, we have organised our spellings using guidance from the National Curriculum and the Letters and Sounds programme to ensure we cover all the spelling patterns and pronunciations. In KS2, we use the Twinkl ‘Plan It’ scheme to ensure we cover all the patterns required in the National Curriculum.
Trips and Visits:
These exciting 'hooks' immerse pupils in their new genre, text or area of study. Often linked to their 'topic' or theme, this allows for cross-curricular and seemless learning opportunities.
An example of this is in Year 4, where a trip to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London enables pupils to be inspired, amazed and immersed in the world of Harry Potter, before studying the text across the Spring Term.
