Is BYOD compulsory in Years 5 - 8?
No, but we highly recommend children bring their own device.
Do I have to buy the device from Noel Leeming?
No. Noel Leeming has provided us with a package deal that includes a carry bag, earphones and insurance for convenience (and at a great price!), but you are by no means obligated to use this deal. The only stipulation is that the device you buy must meet our minimum requirements.
Through the MyNoelLeeming login you can access special BYOD prices specific to what is in stock in New Zealand at the time.
Why can’t the school supply a device for every child?
Westburn School has a very limited operations grant so is not able to provide a device for every child.
Why are only some devices approved for BYOD?
BYOD devices were approved based on their ability to support learning in a classroom environment. This included minimum hardware and software specifications required to run modern applications, the durability, reliability and ease-of-transport of a device moving between home and school, and also how the device could be utilised by teachers and students in a school and classroom context.
Can my child bring a Chromebook?
Yes, chromebooks are our preferred device. If it fits the specification it is suitable for learning at our school.
Why does the device need to have a screen size over 9.7 inches?
Although a BYOD device is exclusively used by the child who it belongs to, a larger screen allows them to work collaboratively with classmates (the other children can watch, give input or directions), and share their learning with their teacher or other students. A larger screen size also allows teachers to more easily monitor children’s work and cyber-safety practices.
How much time do you envisage the children spending on devices per day?
This will vary depending on the learning task. A device is like a piece of stationery for your child. A device is only one tool a teacher may use. They will use it for different purposes in different subjects. All teachers ensure there is balance.
What proportion of time do the children spend using their devices and for which subjects?
This will vary in every classroom. Students will use their device in all subjects at some point but not every lesson, every day. All teachers ensure there is balance.
Will the children have access during lunchtime/morning tea?
No. Devices are strictly for educational purposes only and under teacher supervision.
There may be groups that your child attends where a device is required, e.g., Code Club.
What insurance will I need?
The insurance of the device is the parents responsibility.
Why is Westburn's senior school BYOD?
Westburn School is a multi platform and future focused school. Digital technology is an important aspect of preparing our children to participate, create and thrive in this fast-moving digital world. Here at Westburn we are redefining learning and achievement through the use of digital technology by developing confidence and skill in the use of various digital technologies by increasing student engagement, global readiness and most importantly developing digital citizenship.
Does Westburn follow a researched based learning model when it comes to the use of digital technology?
Yes. Everything we do as educators is evidence based. The Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition (SAMR) model, developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, offers a method of seeing how computer technology might impact teaching and learning. It shows a progression that adopters of educational technology often follow as they progress through teaching and learning with technology. It is a framework through which teachers can assess and evaluate the technology used in the classroom. As teachers move along the continuum, computer technology becomes more important in the classroom but at the same time becomes more invisibly woven into the demands of good teaching and learning.
