Studios are our term for the 9-week project created for, and sometimes by, our learners. Studios are directly aligned to our competencies to ensure our learners progress through their portfolios, demonstrating skill and growth over the quarter. They include:
an authentic question or problem to solve
an engaging real-world launch
an investigation where students explore questions they have
an impact they make through a product or performance they create
revision cycles to the product or performance or the rated formative assessment pieces through actionable feedback based on the continua
Studios DO NOT equal a credit. Studios are the ways in which learners create evidence for their portfolio. Completed portfolio equals the credit.
Quick Tips:
Know the competencies well by unpacking them!
Reach out for help from the coach or expert designers in your building
Ask students what they would like to learn and leave room for choice
How do I ensure I am creating a well-designed studio?

In a learner-centered model, ensuring clarity of the direction a student can go is imperative. Here are some ways our teachers have made the pathway of learning clear for our students. A note, however-- if a learner wants to take a hike away from the path, that is okay, too. They can explore, investigate, and create based on the competencies.

You have heard of calibration. Now get ready for Validation! Our calibration protocols focus on if our ratings on student work from studios are at least one rating from each other. Validation asks the question-- does the studio do what we need it to do? To participate in a validation protocol, all you need is one other person, the stepped protocol below and the notes from the framework to the right.
