Culture & Identity
Studio Overview
Studio Overview
As we go through life, we are on a constant journey to figure out who we are and how we fit in this world. This is a common theme explored in literature and diverse media.
As you begin your high school journey, it is also a great time to begin to explore your identity. Understanding who you are will ultimately help you decide what profession to pursue, who you want to spend your time with, and what you want to do. It can also make you parts of different communities that will hopefully nourish, support, and encourage you to be the best you can be.
In this studio, we will be exploring our identity through the following essential questions through the lens of community, culture and storytelling:
What shapes our identity?
How does community influence identity and how does identity influence community?
How important is culture to identity?
Why is storytelling an important aspect of culture and our society?
How do we tell our stories through the lens of our past, present, and future?
In this studio we will work to develop competencies in literacy, which is the comprehension of written, spoken, and watched mediums of communication. We will also develop writing and communicating skills.
Use the competency guide to direct your learning.
ELA 1 - Critical Reading
ELA 2 - Writing Effectively
ELA 3 - Collaborative Discussion
In this milestone we are going to spend time harnessing our reading and comprehension abilities. We will do this by knowing and understanding how to use reading strategies and understanding text structure and function.
This milestone will investigate Esperanza's view on the gender and gender expectations/roles within her cultural dynamic. Once we have gathered data we will participate in a collaborative discussion with our peers to confirm, challenge, and develop our thoughts.
We are on information overload. Through social media, news, and advertisements we are constantly being given information. We can research and find information on almost every topic with a few clicks of a button. The question then becomes: can you trust everything you read on the internet or hear on the news or from your friends? In this milestone we will practice ways to assess the source of information to determine how credible is this information.
There are many steps to developing a solid argument. In this milestone we will walk through the different sections of a non-fiction piece of writing and create our own along the way.
We have a tendency to think one and done, but really revision is a process. In this milestone we will learn about providing and receiving feedback to improve upon our argument paper.
