Wes-Del Elementary uses a number of instructional approaches and resources to give our students rich and effective STEM opportunities. PLTW, CREATE2THINK, IDOE lessons, and teacher created lessons are used in the general education classroom multiple times throughout each 9 weeks. Every student K-5 also attends the STEM class which is in the special rotation. This class uses additional lessons and curriculum from PLTW, CREATE2THINK, and STEM Education Works where the students have the opportunity to use Spheros, 3D printers, robotic arms, assembly lines, etc.. Each general education teacher, as well as the STEM teacher, are PBL certified, helping to give Wes-Del Elementary a true STEM environment.
We have worked with Equitable Education Solutions for multiple years to support us in our PBL and STEM endeavors. In this partnership, we were able to participate in their PBL Certification Training which aligns with Buck Institute, as EES also preaches the Gold Standards model of Project Based Learning.
Wes Del teachers use collaborative learning throughout each quarter, including during STEM/PBL units. Teachers determine roles and responsibilities with their students. Students work collaboratively. Teachers offer guidance, support and encouragement to groups, as needed. Groups accountability is measured.
20 of the 20 teachers, or 100% of general education teachers use PLTW, CREATE2THINK, and teacher created curriculum units to implement STEM in their classrooms. Indicative of the implementation plan below, 100% of teachers implement multiple planned STEM units per quarter. As a collaborative working environment, administrators and STEM teacher support the facilitation and planning of STEM implementation in the general education classroom.
