Free Clock Hours from OSPI

For candidates whose first component submission was prior to 2018:

OSPI gives up to 90 clock hours to National Board candidates and teachers. These are offered in two allotments.

  • 45 clock hours to National Board candidates upon “completion” of the National Board process. This includes submission of components 2-4 and the assessment for component 1. OSPI reviews a list of “completers” from NBPTS in the fall for comparison with submission data from the most recent cycle. All identified candidates will be sent documentation to sign and return to their district.
  • 45 clock hours upon certification, before December 31. OSPI receives an additional list from NBPTS of all newly certified NBCTs. All identified candidates will be sent documentation to sign and return to their district.

For candidates whose first component or renewal submission was in 2018 or later:

OSPI gives up to 200 clock hours to National Board candidates and teachers. Clock hours are only available when directly requested by the candidate.

  • 50 clock hours per complete component submission; up to 200 total for completion of all components. NBPTS provides OSPI with a report that is used to verify component submissions in the previous cycle. Clock hours are requested via survey. Eligible candidates will be sent documentation to sign and return to their district.
  • 200 clock hours for National Board Renewal candidates upon verification of the complete Profile of Professional Growth. OSPI verifies submissions around score release in November. Clock hours are requested via survey. Eligible candidates will be sent documentation to sign and return to their district.

Monetary Rewards

Upon certification candidates are eligible for the National Board Certified Teacher Bonus. For the 2019-20 school year the bonus will be $5505 and in 2020-21 it will be $5621. This bonus adjusts with inflation.

First year NBCTs receive 60% of the base bonus.

If the NBCT works in a "Challenging School" they will receive an additional $5000 bonus. This bonus does not adjust with inflation. To see if a school qualifies as a Challenging School, check this OSPI link.

The bonus is paid in a lump-sum on the August 31 paycheck.
