The Youth United program is a volunteer program that is self-governed by each individual student, and rewards students who achieve the volunteer hour requirement for their contributions to our communities. Youth United is available in select Chelan and Douglas county schools districts (including home and private schools within those school districts) for youth in grades 6-12 (5th grade students may start in April of their 5th grade year). Though United Way of Chelan and Douglas Counties strives to ensure there are a number of volunteer projects available in which students may opt to participate on the Volunteer Calendar at any given time, the responsibility for finding volunteer opportunities and making contact with the organization in order to volunteer lies with the student.
Not only does this allow the organization to ask pertinent questions of the student, but it provides opportunities for students to gain experience communicating with adults to acquire work; a skill found to be lacking amongst teens in today's world.
Once a student begins volunteering, they maintain a record of all of their work, complete with supervisor contact information between April 1st and March 31st of the following year (all volunteer hours are verified, so failure to provide complete supervisor contact information may result in being disqualified for the award).
