Term 6
Kestrels are currently reading...
Term 6
27/06/2025
English- We have started a new topic looking a picture booked called "The Whale". It is an interesting book because it has no words so children have used clues and made inferences about what has happened. So far, we have looked at how we can use fronted adverbials and direct speech in our piece of writing that we will be doing next week.
Maths- We have continued our Geometry topic, looking at different types of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons and lines of symmetry. Children have got on really well with this. I would encourage some children to continue consolidating their knowledge of pentagons, hexagons, heptagons and octogons.
Geography- This week, we have looked at climate in different states of USA. We compared temperature and rainfall in Arizona and New York, using lines of latitude to explain why these might have certain temperatures.
Art- We have been looking at repeating patterns with the rainforest as our inspiration. We are thinking about how patterns are repeated on fabrics used for furniture etc. Using patterns, we are going to be having a go at a PVA glue batik as a method of making matterns on material.
20/06/2025
English- Children have made a great start on their non-chronological reports about the Romans. They have been using all of the information we have learnt over the past couple of terms and are really thinking hard about their layout and presentation.
Maths- We have started our new topic on Geometry. This includes looking at angles, identifying acute, obtuse and right angles and looking at different triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons.
Geography- We have started our new topic on the USA. Children have spent some time identifying different states and we will be moving on to looking at climate and population distribution across the USA.
PE- We are having a great time learning skills in rounders including throwing, catching and fielding. We have also put these skills into practice when we have had our visitors in on Tuesday to do Cricket.
Year 4 Roman Baths trip 04/06/2025
On Wednesday, Year 4 had the opportunity to visit the Roman Baths as we come to the end of our history topic on Ancient Rome. Not only did the children get to wander around the baths, listening to the audio guide, they also had workshops in the afternoon in which they dressed up as Romans, became archaeologists and handled and identified some genuine Roman artefacts. We have nothing but praise for the amazing behaviour of Kestrels class as they navigated their way around the baths, ensuring to be polite and respectful to all members of the public who were also visiting. We even had lovely feedback from a visiting tourists who commented on how polite and well behaved our children were. An absolutely wonderful day and a massive thank you and well done to Year 4s for helping to make the day so fantastic.
Please find pictures below!
Term 5
16/05/2025-
It has been an unusual this week with SATS week on and Year 4 being out of their usual classroom. However they had great fun working with the Year 2s on some story telling. Year 4s took part in some drama based English lessons with Mr Munroe and thought about characteristics of goodies and baddies in narratives.
We are working hard on our decimals still and this will lead nicely into our new topic of Money, which we will begin next week. We also had the opportunity to use our decibel meter in Science, measuring sound in different areas of the school. We found making lots of noise on the playground to be the noisiest area!
We have a busy week next week, with Multi-skills on Tuesday and Sports day on Friday.
02/05/2025-
We have had a busy week of learning in Kestrels this week. We have continued to work on our information texts, this week focusing on the use of prepositions and relative clauses. This was a tricky task but children rose to the challenge and did a really impressive job! We have continued our work on decimals in Maths, dividing one and two digit numbers by 100 and ensuring that we have a solid understanding of tenths and hundredths.
Children have worked hard in Science, naming different parts of the ear, as well as rounding off our Geography topic by comparing physical features in Naples to physical features here in our local area.
We have also had a lovely trip to the library this week and had our whole class photo taken- keep your eyes peeled for these order forms coming home in the next few weeks!
With camp coming up, we have taken a fair bit of time discussing what it is going to be like and what to expect. This can be a daunting time for some children as it is their first time away from home but we will, undoubtedly, have a fantastic time! If any children are feeling concerned about camp, please encourage them to speak to me or come and grab me yourself so we can ease any worries.
25/04/2025
What an amazing start back to the term! Children enthusiastically shared what they'd done in the Easter holidays with me and the rest of the class and it seems that everyone is fully rested and ready to get back into learning! Many thanks for all of the Doodle, spellings and reading that parents have been encouraging over the half term!
English- We have started looking at our new stimulus 'Until I met Dudley' which is a fun and imaginative book about how everyday appliances work. Silly descriptions are given for standard appliances and children will be writing one of their own funny descriptions in the coming weeks.
Maths- We have gone head first back into decimals and have been exploring hundredths this week. This is really important for understanding money and it would be great for you to discuss this at home with children!
Science- We have started a new topic- Sound. This week, we have learnt that sounds travel through vibrations to the ear and can travel through solids, liquids and gases. We used different musical instruments to identify what it was that was vibrating to create the sounds.
French- We have started a topic titled 'At the doctors' in which children ask questions and answer them about what is wrong. This week we learnt how to say we have a stomache, toothache, headache and even that we've broken our arm in French!
28/03/2025
Another busy week in Kestrels class! We have had a very productive week.
Maths- In maths, we have just finished off our fractions topic, in which we are looking at adding and subtracting fractions from mixed numbers. We will shortly be moving on to decimals and will be making links between fractions and decimals. This will be the first time Year 4s have looked at decimals so please support your children with any learning they are given at home with this.
English- We have looked at our new stimulus: The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore. This is a lovely short film which can be found online. We will be using this to write our own narratives next week and this week, children have created their own characters and written character descriptions for them.
Science- We have set up yet another evaporation experiment, this time to identify if all liquids evaporate. To test this, we have used 5 different liquids (squash, fairy liquid, vinegar, milk and oil) and we will be leaving them for a week to see how much we have left at the end.
History- This week, we looked at the heirachy in Ancient Rome and the different social standings. Children can identify: slaves, pleibians, patricians, senators, consuls and emporers. They even thought about where they would want to be placed in these Ancient Roman social standings.
Next week is our last week of Term 4 and we have lots coming up, including the camp meeting, ukulele concert, fun swim and a visit from Wessex water.
STEM week and Root connections trip
21/03/2025- We have had a fantastic week enjoying different STEM based activities! With a fantastic visit from Bath planetarium and from the local vets, we have had the opportunity to explore some new avenues and get creative. All children at Welton took part in the 'If you were an engineer' national competition, in which children designed their own invention which could solve a problem in some way. Alongside this, they wrote a letter to explain their invention. These will be on display in the hall for you to come and see!
We also had the priveledge of going up to Root connections this week. It was a beautiful, sunny day for it. We did some pond dipping in a variety of ponds and streams, accompanied by a woodland walk. Children then had the opportunity to be creative and decorated their jars, which were used for the pond dipping, as well as creating their own clay minibeast to go inside their jars.
It has been a really great week all round and it has been so lovely to see children think like scientists, engineers and mathematicians.
Spring Term 2

We have had a busy week this week, with Careers day on Tuesday! It has been great to see children thinking about this and they really engaged with all of our visitors.
English- This week we have written our newspaper reports about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. We used the stimulus 'Escape from Pompeii' for this and children have shown a great interest.
Maths- We have continued our fraction work this week and we are trying hard to ensure we can remember what a mixed number and an improper fraction is. We have started looking at equivalent fractions on number lines and how we can convert mixed numbers and improper fractions.
Science- This week we did a Science experiment throughout the day to test the rate of evaporation at different temperatures. Throughout the day we took readings and found that our prediction- the petri dish on the radiator which managed to evaporate the most water- was correct!
Geography- This week, we thought about how people in Naples use the Mediterranean sea. We had some great discussions about tourism and how tourism helps bring money to an area.
PSHE- This week we had talked about the importance of keeping our bodies healthy by discussing smoking and vaping. Children have engaged well in these disucssions and took the discussions really seriously and maturely.
07/03/2025- Another great week! It was fantastic to see so many amazing costumes and adjectives on World Book Day and it has been great to see such an enthusiasm for books and reading. This week we have done:
English- We started looking at our new book 'Escape from Pompeii' and have used this as our stimulus for writing sentences with subordinate clauses and direct speech.
Maths- Fractions work. We have looked at improper fractions and mixed numbers. As we continue our work on this, we will look at converting these between one another.
Science- We have set up an investigation about evaporation. Next week, we will carry out the investigation looking at the rate of evaporation in different locations which are all different temperatures.
French- Children wrote some great sentences this week naming parts of the face. They created some of their own aliens with 'deux yeux' and 'neuf oreilles' etc.
RE- We have finished out 'gospel' topic where we have looked at a range of parables and how these link to the Christian belief of 'agape'. We will be moving on to our Christianity 'Salvation' topic next week.
28/02/2025- It has been so nice to welcome children back to school this week! Kestrels have done a wonderful job of getting straight back into routine, as well as taking a great attitude towards their assesments this week. They have really taken these in their stride and have done such a wonderful job.
Due to assessments this week, English and Maths learning in the mornings has been minimal, however our afternoons have remained the same.
We leapt straight back into Geography and our learning about the Mediterranean. This week we discussed why certain produce grows in Mediterranean countries and how interdependence is developed between Mediterranean countries and other countries for this produce.
We also learnt about the water cycle in Science, using vocabulary such as: evaporation, condensation and precipitation.
In French, we have developed our reading skills and were able to comprehend a number of sentences about parts of the face from which we were able to draw an alien based on the description.
In RE, we have been looking at parables told by Jesus and his disciples and how these demonstrate the Christian belief of agape (unconditional love). This week, we looked at a parable called the Widow's gift and had discussions about how agape is represented in this parable.
Term 3 learning overview
Spring- Term 3
07/02/2025
We have had a really fantastic week this week for Children's mental health week. We have done a variety of different activities each morning, including listening to a range of different music, drawing together, reading with the Year 2 class, writing a note to someone in the community who we feel has helped us and most importantly, had toast every morning!
We have discussed at length what it means to maintain your mental wellbeing and ensure that you are doing positive things to look after yourself. I have really enjoyed seeing children carry out some of their homework activities and discussing these with them. A big thank you to all the parents who quickly helped their child fill in the questionnaire to write our biographies this week. We have been looking at inspirational people this week and it is nice for children to look closer to home as well as the bigger picture.
As well as all of this, we had a wonderful time doing outdoor learning on Wednesday. Children built dens, played nature bingo, searched for different colours within the nature and created some artwork with nature. It was lovely to see the Year 4s get on so well and work collaboratively with the Year 5s to do this. I hope Kestrels have had a lovely week and I appreciate all of their hard work.

Autumn Term
Welcome to Kestrels class Year 4! This term we have got so many exciting things to learn and get stuck in to. We are going to be getting hands on in Science, looking at electricity and spening lots of time building electrical circuits. We are also going to be very hands on in Maths as we think about place value and exchanging ones for ten, tens for hundreds and hundreds for thousands. In English we are going to be focusing on Greek myths as this links to our History topic of Ancient Greece. I love exploring Greek myths and hope you all will too!
Term 1
Week 6- drawing on the tables and using place value counters to support column subtraction with exchanges.
Week 3- Quad kids, science experiment and school council vote.
Term 1
18/10/2025
Year 4s are doing so well considering we are in Week 7 of the term, still with a week to go! We have finished off our Addition and Subtraction topic in Maths, looking at estimating and using checking strategies by using the inverse. We have now moved on to our Measurement topic, focusing specifically on areas of shape. In Year 4, we measure this by counting squares inside a given shape.
We are building up to writing a persusasive letter in English and this week we have generated sentences using subordinate clauses, rhetorical questions, expanded noun phrases and facts and opinions that could be embedded within our letter. We are continuing to work hard on our handwriting, really trying to join using cursive joins and making sure that the presentations of our work is something we are proud of.
We have come to the end of our 'electricity' topic in Science now. Please discuss with your children what a conductor and insulator is and how to build a simple circuit. This has been a topic that children have really enjoyed as it has been very practical and hands on.
11/10/2025
This week we have spent a lot of time working on our column subtraction when having to do an exchange. This can be quite a tricky concept and the Year 4s have tried so hard and been so patient with getting it right! We enjoyed drawing on the tables and using our place value counters to physically exchange tens for ones, hundreds for tens or thousands for hundreds.
Alongside this, children had a go at writing a newspaper report based on the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus before moving on to our next piece of writing which will be based on the myth of Perseus and Medusa.
We are nearing the end of our Ancient Greeks topics and will be learning about the legacy they left behind in the coming weeks. We looked at conflict in Ancient Greece this week, specifically the Peloponnesian war between Athens and Sparta. We have been doing some really good computing work as well, focusing on the internet and the difference between web pages and websites.
We also had fun in Science this week, making our own switches and incorporating them into our electrical circuits!
04/10/2025
We are at the end of Week 5- wow! This term is just flying by and I am loving working with Kestrels class. We have had a great week of Maths, using column addition. In English, we have explored a range of grammatical features and I was impressed to see children work so hard at using relative clauses. We found time this week to do our cauliflower cards (Christmas cards) which have been sent home with children. Should you wish to buy them, please return the form to school. We have been enjoying learning about the Ancient Greeks in History and learnt about Alexander the Great this week. We also had fun on Wednesday learning about conductors and insulators. Children used the circuit building equipment to identify which materials were conductors or insulators and were able to come up with a conclusion based on their findings.
27/09/2024
The weeks are just flying by! I can't believe we are now half way througn Term 1. Kestrels completed some really lovely character descriptions which I am endeavouring to display in the classroom. I hope parents/carers have chance to see these when they are next in school. This week, we have focused on the Greek Myth; Daedalus and Icarus. Using this story about how Icarus got too close to the sun and fell, we are going to be writing a newspaper report. So far, children have focused on accurately punctuating direct speech and how fronted adverbials would help our writing flow better.
In Maths, we have come to the end of our 'Place Value' topic by spending the week focusing on rounding. This can be quite a difficult skill and children have showed real resilience and perseverance with this. Next week, we will be moving onto our 'addition and subtraction' topic.
Children got to experiment with the circuits again in Science, creating circuits with faults in them for their peers to correct. I am also impressed by how children have got in with our Netball topic in PE. We managed to play some mini games of Netball this week and children showed real care over the skills we have practised. Many thanks to all who are continuing to read with their children and encourage them to do their homework. We do have a homework club on a Thursday lunchtime if children are finding it hard to do this at home.
20/09/2024
I am continuously impressed by the way Year 4 are working so hard and getting on so well with their learning! The jump between Year 3 and 4 can feel quite daunting sometimes, but Kestrels class are handling it so well! We have achieved some fantastic pieces of writing for our first big write of the year about our own mythical creatures. These have been based on the Minotaur as we study Greek Myths in English. Children have also add to their established skills of comparing and order numbers, this time with numbers up to 10,000.
We had a fun, one-off, science lesson this week where we focused on what it means to 'Work scientifically'. We worked as scientists with a range of equipment and different groups changed different variables- either bicarbonate of soda or acid- to see how this affected the height of the foam it created. Alongside this, we also had the wonderful opportunity to partake in Quad Kids on Friday afternoon, experiencing a range of different atheltic activities. A busy but fun week! Thank you Year 4s for your continuous hard work.
13/09/2024
Another busy week! I cannot express enough how proud and amazed I am by how well Kestrels class have settled into school and got on with some fantastic work! As we are building up to a character description, we have been reading Greek myths which link to our History topic of Ancient Greece. As we have read Theseus and the Minotaur, we are using the Minotaur as the basis for our own mythical character that we are going to create next week. We have been looking at adjectival and prepositional noun phrases and building on these to add description to our character. I have been so impressed Year 4's knowledge surrounding grammar and how they have applied this.
In Maths we continue to build on our knowledge of place value and have been building up our knowledge of 4 digit numbers by placing them on number lines, partitioning them and flexibly partitioning them. Next week, as we continue to build on this, please encourage your children to complete their Doodle maths homework assignment as it will set them up for the upcoming lessons.
In our foundation subjects, we have practiced a range of passes we may use in Netball during our PE lessons, looked at differences between Athens and Sparta in Ancient Greece and read the origin story for the Hindu festival of Diwali. Kestrels are also enjoying building circuits in Science and working as scientists to get the lightbulb to light up.
06/09/2024
What a flying start to the year we've had! Children have settled back into school and routine so well. I have been so impressed.
We have quite quickly got back into the flow of learning and have begun focusing on place value in Maths. We have been representing and partitioning numbers up to 1000. Children have had the opportunity to use Base 10 to do this and physically build the numbers, really thinking about how many hundreds, tens and ones are in the number. As well as this, all children now have a TTRS login! Times tables are so important and we really focus on them in Year 4. Please do try and encourage your children to practice on TTRS when they're at home, even if just for 5 minutes.
We have started reading our whole class novel- The Great Chocoplot, which we are all really enjoying. All children also now have a school reading book. Many thanks to everyone who has already started reading with their children at home. Children have been keen to showing me that they have got their reading records signed! I tend to check these every Friday.
Meet our wonderful team.
