Math Club (2015-2020) / Math Competition(2019-2020)

I was the founder and leader of a math based club called Math Club. The leaders of the club decided to organize a math based competition where the final rounds would consist of a teacher VS finalist student round. This was held for two years however will continue even after my graduation.

The competition consisted of math based problems from all aspects of the education curriculum : from algebra to calculus. Me and my leadership team found or made up the questions.

Participation fee for this competition was 20 baht per student the first year, and 40 baht per student the second year. All the funds that were raised from this were donated to an organization that takes care of disabled children called Camillian homes. We donated to this organization because we felt it might help educate future students in math, and the goal of our club has always been to spread knowledge about math.

LO Connections:

  • Learning outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

As a leader, I had to make sure I understood all the problems so that in case a refutation was presented, I would be able to demonstrate why the answer given is correct. Therefore this really allowed me to grow in my math abilities.

  • Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Math is something I find challenging yet I still took the challenge to run this club/ this competition. I developed my math skills more and looked at problems that I would not have otherwise saw.

  • Learning outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

I had to prepare a lot for this competition to play out. Had to broadcast it to all of the high school community, make questions, design certificates and so much more.

  • Learning outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

I was a leader in this club for about 4 years and took part in organizing math competition twice.

  • Learning outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

My leadership team was essential in the success of the math competition. We all had our strengths and weaknesses therefore we used those to help each other and benefit the club/competition best.

  • Learning outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Donated the money to Camillian homes seeing as we value education for disabled children.

  • Learning outcome 7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

We had to be fair when counting points and such during the math competition so that all the measures were fair and ethical.

SerVICE Conference 2019

I took part in an conference named SerVICE in November of 2019. During this conference, I went on what is called a BYB trip. For my specific BYB trip, I went to a House of Blessings. This is a place where children that do not have a family go. The parents of these children are often in prison. While I was here, I ended up making origami and entertaining the children as well as helping the local painters to paint some of the side paths inside of their building.

Additionally, I also attended workshops/ talks that talk about:

1) Climate change

2) Recycling

3) Seed bombs

And many more.

LO Connections:

  • Learning outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I learned that I am fairly lucky with where I am, and rather I am in a position where I am able to help other people. As a result, I should be grateful with my life and develop in helping others more.

  • Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Going out and helping supposedly random children was something that seemed rather odd to me, however I learned that I actually enjoyed it very much. Therefore this was a challenge that I very much liked.

  • Learning outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

When helping the House of Blessing by painting the side paths, it was fun because the work was collaborative.

  • Learning outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

I listened to several talks on climate change and how we can work to mitigate its effect. I learned the impact of eating meat on the climate and therefore with the lessons I learned, they all help engage me with issues of global significance.

RECOFTC Event : Forests are Us: Why Forests Matter.

In 2018, I participated in an events called Forests Are Us. During this event, I collaborated with International Forestry Student Association(IFSA) to input a high school students perspective for the policies that they were planning on implementing. I was also used to figure out what an "average youth" knows about the forest, and what they understand regarding community forestry. My peers were all university students therefore they represented the perspectives from that category. The questions I was asked to prepare for were:

1. Can you describe the community forests in your countries?

2. Based on your previous answers, what future inventions can you foresee in the Forestry sector?

3. What do you think is the major involvement of youth in Forestry in general?

4. How about in the forest communities, particularly?

5. Give me one particular problem regarding the forest/forestry/forestry community/forestry education As a youth, what can you do to address that problem?

I put this down as service because my experience is what was used by the organization in policy making hence I was helping the organization quite a bit.

  • Learning outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

This day, I listened to several talks from professionals in this field of forestry and hence developed quite a sense of understanding regarding the importance of community forestry.

  • Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

I was quite unaware of what community forest was and its importance however once I took part in this event, I undertook this challenge and learned quite a lot.

  • Learning outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

I was in touch with the organizers of this event because of events that they host in Debate. Therefore I was reached out to participate in their event and I presented my best.

  • Learning outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

I had to work with students from IFSA and I learned quite a lot from them as they debriefed me on the situation and such.

  • Learning outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The topic was regarding community forests therefore it is already a topic that is very much related to global significance. My ideas were taking into policy making therefore this also relates much with solving global issues.
