HEALTH SCREENINGS
HEALTH SCREENINGS
Vision/Hearing screening: Please remember that these are screenings, not diagnostic examinations and are conducted with student’s glasses/hearing devices if indicated.
All results and referrals are viewable in the Health Portal, You will receive notification only if your child does not pass a screening.
Vision screening helps identify possible vision difficulties that may affect reading, classroom work, and everyday activities. Students complete brief, age-appropriate checks using eye charts and other screening tools.
Identifying concerns early helps families arrange appropriate eye care and supports students’ ability to learn and participate comfortably. Parents or guardians are notified when further evaluation is recommended.
Hearing screening helps identify hearing difficulties that may affect speech, communication, and classroom learning. Students wear headphones and respond to a series of sounds at different pitches.
Early identification helps students receive the evaluation and support they need to hear and participate fully at school. Parents or guardians are notified when further evaluation is recommended.
Height and weight screenings help monitor student growth. Measurements are taken privately and used to calculate body mass index (BMI), a screening measure that considers weight in relation to height, age, and sex.
These measurements can help identify growth concerns that may benefit from discussion with a healthcare provider. BMI is one part of a child’s overall health picture and does not provide a diagnosis or a complete measure of health.
Postural screening checks for signs of spinal curvature, including scoliosis, during a child’s growing years. The school nurse observes the student’s back while standing and bending forward, looking for differences in shoulder, hip, or back alignment.
Identifying concerns early allows families to seek further evaluation and monitoring. Parents or guardians are notified when follow-up with a healthcare provider is recommended.
SBIRT stands for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment. Used in Massachusetts schools, it is a prevention-focused approach that helps students make healthy choices about alcohol and other substances.
Students meet individually with a trained staff member (ie: Teacher, Guidance Counselor, School Nurse) to answer a few screening questions and have a brief, supportive, nonjudgmental conversation. This provides an opportunity to reinforce healthy decisions, identify concerns early, and connect students with additional support when needed.
SBIRT encourages open communication and helps students build connections with trusted adults who support their health, safety, and success.
