HOW CAN I PREPARE MYSELF FOR THE TEACHER SCHOLARS PROGRAM?
The first step is being here! We have some suggestions for how you can prepare yourself for this exciting journey below.
Take an education course to explore your interest in education. EDUC 214+215 are good places to start
Educating English Learners is required for the program. Take it with Prof Tutin in the fall at Wellesley or with Prof Palaia at MIT in the spring (or summer, when offered).
Work with students in a summer or after-school program, at the CSC or WCCC, or through an EDUC course.
Meet with the Director (Professor Soo Hong) as soon as you think you might be interested in the program, so that you can get connected to the right people who will support you.
You’ll need to meet with a faculty advisor in the subject matter area of your license to learn about the courses you should take to be on track for licensure.
Meet with our DESE Liaison and Licensure Officer (Professor Diane Tutin) to discuss your specific questions about licensure in your area.
WHAT DOES THE APPLICATION REQUIRE?
Applications to the Teacher Scholars Program are due every year on March 15th. You should prepare to submit the following materials in your application.
Application form: You will submit an online application via Google Form submission. The form is available during the fall semester.
Education coursework: You will submit a list of completed and planned coursework in the education department.
Teaching program plan: You will submit a program plan (course list) for your middle or high school licensure program that was worked out in consultation with your designated faculty advisor in the subject matter department.
Statement of interest: You will share a 2-3 page statement of interest that describes what led you to teach, what you have learned about yourself as a teacher in your work with students, and what you hope to learn in the future.
Resume: You will share a current resume.
References: You will submit contact information for a faculty reference and an employer reference.
Transcript: You will include a copy of your most current transcript. We look for progress and displayed competency in your overall courses with special attention to your education coursework and content-area coursework. An updated transcript that includes your junior spring grades may be requested when available.
WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR ENTRY INTO THE PROGRAM?
After applications are submitted by March 15, students will be notified in early April about their acceptance to the Wellesley Teacher Scholars Program. Accepted students will be approved to enroll in EDUC 300 and EDUC 398H for the fall semester. Students will work with the Director in April/May to discuss the selection of a school placement for the upcoming year. Over the summer, students will engage in light preparation for their fall fieldwork - completing fingerprinting and background checks, submitting paperwork for fieldwork, and convening as a cohort for an early August Zoom meeting.
