This 1/2 year 7th and 8th grade elective course is designed to help middle schoolers navigate the interconnected digital world that we live in. We begin the year with a unit on respect, responsibility, and inclusivity - the interpersonal skills that 7th and 8th graders need to build and maintain healthy relationships. Next, we will dive deep into digital citizenship and how to be responsible, ethical producers and consumers of digital media. The course ends with a unit on evaluating media for trustworthiness and the influence of social media on young minds.
Our topics of study include:
Social Literacy: Learn about emotional intelligence and communicating with others respectfully.
Media Literacy: Learn about digital citizenship, digital footprints, and evaluating media.
Social Media: Learn how to use social media to communicate with others and how influencers make money.
Public Speaking: Learn about how to use facts and research to create strong presentations and share ideas.
Students will be taking part in a relevant learning experience where we will be learning about and using digital tools to make responsible choices. We will also work on reading and writing strategies throughout the class.
