Hockey Academy

2023-2024 School Year Registration Process

  1. Click the Register button for the school of your choice and complete the Academy Registration form.

  2. Students that are not currently registered with WECDSB must also complete a school registration package.

  3. WECDSB students not currently registered with one of the host school(s) listed below must also complete a school registration package.

  4. Go to the School Cash website to setup your School Cash Online Account in order make future payments.

  5. You will receive an email from School Cash. Upon receipt of this email, please complete your Academy payments.


Open to students in Grades 6-12, the Hockey Canada Skills Academy will help student athletes learn and improve on advanced individual skills and tactics, while developing a lifestyle on and off the ice that emphasizes building character through achieving both athletic and scholastic success. Purposeful practices led by highly trained staff, strength and conditioning designed to maximize physical attributes, and a focus on leadership will all position the student athlete to achieve their individual goals.


Technical development focuses on establishing confidence and creativity specific to each player's (forward, defenseman and goaltender) position:

  • Multi Directional Skating

  • Passing

  • Shooting

  • Puck Control

  • Checking Progressions

  • Deceptive Skills

  • Decision Making & Thinking

  • Stance & Movement

Tactical themes are established to increase the athletes' understanding of and passion for the game, translating to maximum success as student athletes progress throughout the various levels. Ice sessions incorporate numerous competitive small area games and cutting edge teaching methods so athletes are stimulated and challenged in each ice session.

2023-2024 Fee Structure Hockey Canada Skills Academy(HCSA)

Registration fees partially offset the operational costs to successfully run the academies (ie. facilities, skills expert wages, National or Provincial sports organization fees, transportation and equipment). Given the sport itself and the facilities used, the registration fees vary between the sports academies that are offered.

Secondary

  • 50 hours of on-ice hockey training delivered by Skills Experts

  • 60 hours of off-ice training (fitness, theory, health curriculum)

  • HCSA jersey and socks

  • HCSA registration fee

  • Dry fit sports shirt

Basketball Academy

Open to students in Grades 6-12, the Basketball Academy will help student athletes learn and improve on advanced individual skills and tactics, while developing a lifestyle on and off the court that emphasizes building character through achieving both athletic and scholastic success. Purposeful practices led by highly trained staff, strength and conditioning designed to maximize physical attributes, and a focus on leadership will all position the student athlete to achieve their individual goals.

Technical development focuses on establishing composure, confidence and creativity on and off the court. The following themes are targeted in personal and competitive settings:

  • Ball Handling Skills-open court and tight spaces

  • Shooting Techniques and Fundamentals

  • Playing against pressure

  • Finishing at the rim techniques

  • Defensive footwork

  • Post play techniques

  • Facing the basket One-on-One techniques and footwork

Tactical themes are established to increase an athlete's understanding and passion for the game, translating to a more effective and imaginative presence on the floor:

  • How to read screens off the ball

  • Techniques in executing ball screens

  • Spacing strategies in transition push and pull

  • Set plays versus offensive concepts

  • Techniques in defending various screens

  • Zone and Man Defensive and Offensive system analysis

  • Detailed practice planning, progressions and strategies

  • Game planning and in game strategies

Sport specific Training: On court training that focuses on the skill execution of all basketball skills. Sport training sessions are competitive and innovative with a focus on individual needs. Video analysis is an important component of skill development in all areas of the game. Sport specific training sessions take place at Central Park Athletics for the program offered through Catholic Central High School.

Classroom Sessions: In the classroom players will explore a variety of topics including coaching and leadership, communication skills, basketball tactics, mental skills training, and nutrition.
