PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) is a psychiatric condition that results after a person goes through or witnesses a traumatic event or series of events.Â
Although PTSD is most common among veterans, anyone can experience it. Some examples of other experiences that may cause this condition are physical, emotional and sexual abuse, serious accidents, natural disaster, serious illness, exposure to war or combat and domestic violence.
The first official 4th of July firework display in The United States of America took place in 1777, only a year after the Declaration of Independence. They quickly became a widespread way to celebrate. But, what do these fireworks actually represent? The large fireworks that whistle as they fly up before exploding, mimic the descent of a bomb during combat. The loud bomb red and yellow flashing lights mimic the noise a large explosive would make as it blew up. The smaller, fizzing fireworks known as dragon eggs mimic the sound, appearance and light that comes when explosive shells are set off.
This topic matters to me because I have seen the way fireworks affect people and pets. I have seen how something that is meant to bring joy, brings them distress and I have always found it upsetting. I plan to major in Psychology with a concentration in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. This major involves giving therapy to people using the aid of horses. I hope to specialize in helping those with PTSD after I graduate.
