The Hurst Artist-in-Residence program was established in 1998 and is made possible by an endowment from Dean W. and Carol W. Hurst. This unique program enables world-renowned artists and scholars to visit Weber State University to interact and work directly with students, faculty, staff, and the Northern Utah community. Each year, a committee selects the artist/scholars from proposals received by departments within the Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities.
Dean W. and Carol W. Hurst Artist/Scholar in Residence
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Overview
The Hurst Artist/Scholar-in-Residence Program is available annually to enhance the various disciplines within the Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities at Weber State University. It is funded and administered through the Dean’s office. Its purpose is to provide students with direct access to a nationally or internationally recognized artist/scholar for an extended period, generally 4-8 days, but it has been up to two weeks depending on availability and budget. Funding is available in a range of $3,000-$15,000.
The priorities of the residency are:
to work daily with students in an intensive workshop situation
to offer advanced students a guest critique
to provide a public lecture, presentation, or performance
Projects involving partnerships between departments and across campus are encouraged. Incorporation of residency into classroom work is also encouraged and may extend beyond the actual residency by preceding the visit or following it. If possible, the residency should result in work or works reflecting the collaboration with students.
No offer of funding or mention of the budget may be made to the artist/scholar or their representative should you have a conversation with them.
Artist/Scholar Qualifications & Requirements
The artist/scholar selected should be someone currently active in their field and recognized for their excellence and expertise. They should have a strong interest in sharing their expertise and experiences with others.
Funds are concentrated on one annual effort to attract a person at the highest level of quality, achievement, and commitment, although multiple residencies have been awarded in a given year. The residency should be constructed to include performances or presentations to multiple audiences. Central to this residency is the close interaction of the artist/scholar with university students, younger audiences, and the community.
Submission Process
Complete and submit the Hurst Artist/Scholar-in-Residency Proposal Form to explain how your artist/scholar selection and residency proposal will meet the priorities of the Hurst Artist-in-Residence Program along with the estimated budgetary requirements.
