Southeastern Regional Conference Fall 2024
In November of 2024, West Chester's SPSEA hosted the Southeastern Regional Conference. 45 students attended, 3 of which were from Villanova's Chapter of SPSEA and 6 from Phoenixville Area High School Educators Rising! Our theme was Oh! The Things You'll Teach! Which focuses on experiences that preservice teachers can experience and learn to take in the classroom with us. Including professional development sessions such as our Keynote Doctor Christopher Clayton and our 8 breakout speakers with their professional development topics. Tori Clayton - Interview Process and the First Few Years of Teaching, Christian Penny - Educational Technology, Emily Southerton - How to Cultivate Your Purpose, Passion Projects, and Personal Agency as a Teacher, Need in Deed - Supports Teachers Doing Service learning projects in grades 3-8, Dr. McInnis - self-care as praxis(Breakout 3 12:20 -1:05) Colleen Commisso - What can teachers do to support students who have experienced trauma, Lisa Hantman- Classroom Management, and Ms. Dzielawa-design teaching k-5. As entry into the conference, we had a joint community service donating canned food and school supplies that were donated to the CCIU Headstart Program and their food pantry!

2024 SPSEA State Conference in Lancaster, PA
In March of 2024, 14 students from West Chester's SPSEA attended the State Conference in Lancaster, PA. There were many professional development, social, and community outreach opportunities that we participated in at the conference. Students learned from many different speakers about a variety of educational subjects such as classroom management, mindfulness in the classroom, being a first-year teacher, AI in the classroom, and more. Additionally, students at the conference had the opportunity to participate in community outreach. Participating in Outreach to teach students, they traveled to Hamilton Elementary School where they helped paint and beautify a local elementary school.

One of our members Eleni Dermatradies attended the Gettysburg leadership institute conference over the summer! Where she was able to network, collaborate with other education majors, and learn about topics that will help in the education feild.

Eleni Dermatradies also attended the NEA for AEC the Aspiring Educators Conference. Where she participated in events learning about professional learning, community building, and advocacy.

PD Committee hosted a panel with John Ross who is a Principle at Lionville Middle school in Downingtown, Linda Romekia a retired Elementary school teacher from East Goshen in West Chester, and Amy McNally an English teacher at Radnor Middle school. These professional educators talked about connecting students in the classroom!

Culturally Responsive Teaching

PACE and Professional Development committees hosted a presentation by Professor Brett Criswell from West Chester University about culturally responsive teaching and how it is implemented, and how we, as pre-service teachers, can implement it into today's education
