On September 11, 2001, four airplanes changed American history. Two of these planes took off from Boston. After being hijacked by terrorists, the first of the planes hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City at 8:46 a.m. The second plane hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m. The third plane, which left Dulles airport outside Washington D.C., struck the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. The fourth plane left Newark airport and was hijacked like the rest of the planes. The passengers on this plane tried to regain control of the plane, but the hijackers crashed this plane into a field in Pennsylvania. At 9:59 a.m., the South Tower collapsed. The North Tower fell at 10:28 a.m. Around 3,000 people died on September 11, 2001, including firefighters, police officers, the people in each of the Trade Center building, those on each of these airplanes, and the hijackers on the planes. The area in New York, where the World Trade Center once stood, came to be known as Ground Zero. Memorials went up everywhere in New York City, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania, where each of the planes had hit and people lost their lives.
