Much of the top half of Georgia served as a battleground during the American Civil War. Large battles occurred in Chickamauga, Rocky Face, Dalton, and Resaca. From there, the fighting continued south to Kennesaw and Atlanta. After General Sherman and his men destroyed Atlanta, they continued on their "March to the Sea", cutting a path of destruction all the way to the city of Savannah.
More than 120,000 confederate troops in the war came from Georgia, as well as almost 4,000 more that fought for the Union. Nearly 35,000 soldiers alone, from both sides, died at the battle in Chickamauga, GA, only 34 miles north of Dalton.
This is just a few of the Civil War memorials, parks, and cemeteries you can visit within 75 miles of Dalton:
The Resaca Confederate Cemetery was the first cemetery in the state of Georgia established for Confederate soldiers. It holds 450 graves, and many of them are for unknown soldiers.
There is a grave of an unknown soldier that's located all by itself at the Fort Wayne Civil War Historic Site in Resaca, Ga.
