This year we will explore fiction books, non-fiction books, and even some poetry together. We will practice using our strategies to solve new words and even have a reading partner to help us along the way.
We use a workshop model. This means we explore a skill together using a mentor text, students go off to apply this skill to their own individualized reading level and then we come together again to share and for closure.
Reading levels progress with difficulty as each new letter is reached. For a student to be proficient on a level, they need to be able to read the text with fluency and comprehend what they read as well. The goal by the end of first grade to to reach a level I.
Remember to read each day. If you get stuck on a word, stop and choose a strategy!
We will be using anchor charts such as this one for each new skill and topic.
