Course: Contemporary Literature
Description:
Contemporary Literature is a semester course that focuses on literature from the 21st and the late 20th centuries that examines the issues of our complex modern world while emphasizing literacy skills. Students develop reading strategies, analyzing texts for meaning and finding patterns as a means to unearth archetypal symbols, themes, and abstract concepts. The course emphasizes the need to understand unfamiliar perspectives, independently research unknown or confusing materials, and draw inferences from literature. In addition, students continue to develop their writing skills using a variety of prompts and exercises designed to challenge assumptions, encourage critical thinking, and promote effective and creative writing.
