ENG 278: Appalachian Literature
Throughout the course of the 2017-2018 school year, students learned the three major style guides: APA, MLA, and Chicago Style. Students used APA primarily in English 111 while MLA was reviewed and utilized throughout English 112. Chicago Style was used for two major papers during the English 278 section. In order to learn each style, students primarily consulted Diana Hacker and Nancy Sommers' A Pocket Style Manual.
Students engaged as a whole class in multiple brainstorming sessions to decide what they did and did not like about other citation sites, as well as original ideas to use toward the development of their own site. In addition, they created template directions so that each page of the site had uniformity.
Students also met as a whole class to decide what specific types of sources would be covered by the site. Following their compilation of a large representative group of source types, ranging from scholarly journals to sound recordings and YouTube Videos, students paired off according to which sources they were interested in documenting. Once a student pair selected a source type, they were then responsible for documenting that type in each required style during the assigned style period.
