Course Offerings
Students will learn how to perform alone and with others, correct singing posture and proper technique, sight singing skills, decoding solfege in music, and how to read music notation. Students will learn and perform pieces in various styles and ensembles while mastering techniques needed for high school choir and beyond. Students will perform pieces both as classes, and as a choir program.
Students who are in Advanced choir are eligible to participate in All County Choir. All County Choir students are hand picked to participate and will join the best students from all across Wake County to put on a concert at the end of two days of hard work.
This is a performance-based class. Attendance at performances is required.
In this *audition only* ensemble, students will focus on percussion technique and ensemble performances.
Students will be required to have at least one year of band/choir/orchestra or a year of lessons in order to be considered for this class. Students will learn and perform pieces in various styles, ensembles, and pieces while mastering techniques needed for high school percussion ensembles and beyond. Students will perform with their percussion ensemble and the concert bands at West Millbrook. Students will be required to have sticks, a drum pad, a method book, and other materials.
This is a performance-based class. Attendance at performances is required.
In the beginning band class students will will learn how to read traditional notation, the correct playing technique and posture, how to make a characteristic sound on their instrument, and habits of a successful instrumentalist.
No prior knowledge of playing a band instrument is necessary.
This is a performance-based class. Attendance at performances is required.
Instruments available to play in the band are: flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba. It is highly recommended that you rent or buy an instrument. In the event that there is something preventing you from renting an instrument, please send me an email and we can discuss borrowing a school owned instrument.
If your student is interested in playing percussion, he or she must start out on a wind instrument. Playing on a wind instrument develops the student's ear and ability to read notation on a staff. Students may audition for percussion ensemble around class registration time to determine if they are able to take the percussion ensemble class (see above for more information).
Intermediate Band - Year 2
In intermediate band students will build upon their knowledge they gained in beginning band. They will learn more advanced music and will have extra curricular performance opportunities available such as All District and All County band.
This is a performance-based class. Attendance at performances is required.
Advanced Band - Year 3
In advanced band students will continue to build upon their band knowledge while getting prepared for high school band class. Students will have the opportunity to join the high school marching band for a night and will be eligible to audition for All District and All County band.
