he purpose of the Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Program is to provide an appropriately challenging educational program for students who perform, or show potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.

The Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Program provides a challenging and enriched educational experience for students who perform — or demonstrate the potential to perform — at significantly high levels of achievement compared to their peers of similar age, experience, or environment. AIG services include differentiated instruction that extends and enriches the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
Talent Development (TD) students are high-performing learners who exhibit characteristics of giftedness and/or show potential for AIG identification. Following district guidelines, the School-Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) reviews data to determine appropriate placement and ensures these students are served alongside identified AIG students. After one year of participation, the SBCGE will review updated data to decide whether the student should be referred for AIG identification testing or continue receiving Talent Development services.

I’m Sujata Shirsekar, an AIG teacher and the Single Subject Acceleration Coordinator with 22 years of experience in WCPSS. I’m passionate about nurturing gifted learners and helping them reach their full potential. As a proud mom of two NC State graduates, we’re a true Wolfpack family! I love traveling, exploring new cuisines, and building meaningful connections with my students—who truly become like a second family over our 180 days together. I’m excited for another amazing year of learning and growing!

I’m excited to start the new school year as White Oak’s 50% AIG and 50% ESL teacher! After many years in the classroom, I look forward to supporting a variety of students in this new role. Originally from Ottawa, Canada—and a former ESL student myself—I’ve taught in Wake County since 2008 and in Nash County before that, in grades 3–5. My husband and I, both ECU graduates, are proud Pirates fans. Our youngest currently attends ECU, and this year we have three children in college! I enjoy reading and visiting Emerald Isle. I’m proud to be a White Oak Explorer—my students inspire me every day, and I’m eager to work with all of you!
