SummerSTEM is a unique professional learning opportunity organized by WakeEd Partnership in collaboration with the Wake County Public School System Office of Magnet & Curriculum Enhancement. It aims to provide WCPSS teachers with an authentic experience where they can connect with and learn from other teachers, as well as STEM business and industry leaders.
During the initial week in July, WCPSS teachers have the opportunity to participate in exciting business immersions in various areas, including IT/Gaming, Agricultural/Natural Resources, Arts, Design Thinking, Government Policy, Construction, Architecture, and Engineering. These immersions allow teachers to gain firsthand knowledge and insights from professionals in these fields.
The primary goal of SummerSTEM is to help teachers enhance their understanding of the connections between real-world problems and project based learning. By experiencing the business and industry visit immersion learning experiences, teachers can incorporate these real-world connections into their teaching practices.
SummerSTEM Coaches, who are teacher leaders, facilitate sessions related to problem-based learning throughout the program. After the initial week of professional learning, teachers spend additional time collaborating with SummerSTEM coaches to design and implement their own project based learning units. This collaborative process helps teachers to develop engaging and relevant projects for their students.
At the end of the program, in May, both teachers and students have the opportunity to showcase their learning at a STEMposium. This event allows participants to share their projects and experiences with the wider community, highlighting the impact of SummerSTEM on teaching and student learning.
