Healthful Living Department Course Syllabus

Course Description: Welcome to Healthful Living! In this class, students will be provided the necessary resources and materials needed to develop a mastery of the skills and knowledge contained in the NC Standard Course of Study for Healthful Living This class is made up of 2 components; health and physical education. Students will work to meet each expectation and objective to earn a passing grade. Successful completion of this course is a graduation requirement.

Grading
The quarter grades will be equally weighted at 40%. A comprehensive final will be given at the end of the semester, weighing 20% of the semester grade. Parents and students are highly encouraged to check their grades on PowerSchool. Grades will be updated weekly. Interims will be given mid quarter. If something is turned in late, do not expect it to be graded immediately.
Letter Grade
A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 D = 60-69 F = 59 AND BELOW
Grading will be determined on a weekly basis by total points. A breakdown of points consists of: Tests/Projects (30%), PE Participation (40%), Classwork (20%), and Fitness Testing/Sport Assessments (10%). Students are expected to follow the RHS Honor Code at all times.
Health
The Health portion is designed to give the student a broad view of what it takes to have a healthy life. It combines issues of social, emotional, and mental health. The importance of physical fitness, nutrition, and weight control is discussed. Abstinence until marriage is stressed as well as the dangers of using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Students are given tools to make healthy decisions, resist peer pressure, and much more.
Materials Needed for Health Class
1”-1 ½” three ring binder, Pen, Pencil, Notebook Paper
Physical Education
The Physical Education component will expose students to fitness testing and conditioning (i.e. Pacer Test/Mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, and sit and reach,) and team sports (i.e. volleyball, flag football, soccer, basketball and pickle ball). Additional content will include history, rules, and terminology of the different sports activities. Emphasis will be placed on participation, skill development, proper etiquette/sportsmanship, and safety.
Expectations:
1. From the time the bell rings, students will have 5 minutes to get changed in their designated locker rooms. If a student is late, a tardy pass must be presented to the supervising teacher in each locker room.
Absences
Actively participating in Physical Education class is essential! Students who miss a day of P.E. class for any reason (present but not feeling well enough to participate, excused/unexcused absence, ISS, CLC, OSS, etc.) will not receive credit for participating that day. To make up participation credit, the student will have to see their teacher to complete an assignment given by your teacher. All activities must be made up by the end of the quarter.
Grading
A weekly grade will be given and posted to PowerSchool. Students may earn 100 points per week (20 per day), which is:
10 pts. – Exercise and fitness (warm-up, stretching, etc.), 10 pts. – participation, (total grade of 20 pts). Please note that if you are not dressed appropriately to meet the standards of that day, you will not receive full credit. If footwear worn is a safety concern, you will not be able to participate for the day.

Rolesville High School – Weight Training I & II Physical Fitness I & II

Course Description: This semester we will be involved in a number of functional body movements to increase your overall personal fitness. In addition, we will track your individual fitness level in the following areas: sit-ups, push-ups, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance.
Expectations for Achieving Success: To be successful in this class each student is expected to…
· Dress out in the 5 minutes given at the beginning of class and report to the designated area
· Be respectful to your teacher and all classmates.
· Stay on task and remain in designated areas. Complete all assignments daily.
· Actively participate in class discussions and activities.
· Students should wear athletic clothing EVERYDAY. If a student has a medical reason for not participating in class, a note from the doctor is required (School Policy)
· Secure personal belongings in the locker room with a LOCK! (Staff is not responsible for stolen/missing items), book bags are not allowed in the weight room due to safety reasons.

A comprehensive final will be given at the end of the semester, weighing 20% of the semester grade. Parents and students are encouraged to check their grades on PowerSchool. Grades will be updated weekly. Interims will be given mid quarter.
WEIGHT TRAINING:
· Daily grade – 60% - Daily Participation: Students will receive a daily grade on their full participation in class. This includes both the pre-exercise warm-up and workout/conditioning activity for the day. Proper attire is required in order to participate. Ex.) Crocs will forfeit your participation due to safety. You must participate in the designed workout area in proper, safe, and on task behavior during the entire duration of the class.
· Physical assessments – 20% - conducted as maxes in the four core lifts taught in class. This will be given as an average of the increase/decrease in those lifts from your initial max (- from old max = 50, old max = 60, +5 = 70, +10 = 90, 15+ = 100)
· Quizzes/Classwork – 20%
PHYSICAL FITNESS:
· Daily grade – 60% - Daily Participation: Students will receive a daily grade on their full participation in class. This includes both the pre-exercise warm-up and workout/conditioning activity for the day. Proper attire is required in order to participate. Ex.) Corcs, sandales, flip flops, boat shoes, dresses, and skirts will forfeit your participation due to safety. You must participate in the designed workout area in proper, safe, and on task behavior during the entire duration of the class.
· Physical assessments – 20% - conducted as pre, mid, and post year assessments in workouts throughout the year.
· Notebook checks – 20% - given throughout the semester on each student’s individual notebook of workouts and notes.

To make up participation credit, the students will have to see their teacher to complete an alternative assignment.
Electronic Devices
Rolesville High School follows all guidelines prescribed by Wake County Public Schools, which can be found in the Student Handbook. Students may use their electronic devices before school, during lunch, after school, and during approved classroom periods. If an electronic device is misused in the classroom it will be confiscated. Continued offenses will also result in confiscation and devices will be turned in to the main office for a parent to pick up.
RHS Honor Code
Plagiarism is defined as any work that is not the original work of the student whose name appears as its author. Plagiarism is a punishable offense. If a student is caught plagiarizing, the student will receive a zero for the assignment. Students lending their work for copying will also receive a zero. Additionally, all students participating in the plagiarism will receive a discipline referral in accordance with the Wake County Public Schools Policy and the RHS Honor Code.
