All Wake County teachers are expected to provide differentiation for students on an as needed basis whether or not the child is identified. Even with identification, students in K-2 rarely work directly with the AIG teacher. However, it is my job to consult with K-2 teachers to help them differentiate.
Students meeting qualifying criteria in grades K‐7 can take advanced academic content in mathematics or English Language Arts through Single Subject Acceleration (SSA). This ensures opportunities for appropriate levels of academic challenge. Nomination and testing takes place each year during April and May. The deadlines are very strict. Go to the official Wake County SSA page for more information.
Students are not normally identified prior to third grade. However, a student may be considered for AIG identification in Kindergarten, First Grade, or Second Grade if they are working at a level 1½ to 2 years above grade level. Data collection must occur in both reading and/or mathematics to document the above grade level performance. I have access to the data collection documents specific to grade level performance. These documents can also be used to consider Whole Grade Advancement.
