Applying for scholarships is a wise decision for several reasons:
Financial Relief: Scholarships provide essential financial support that can help cover tuition, books, and other educational expenses. This can reduce the need for student loans and the stress of debt after graduation.
Access to Opportunities: Some scholarships offer more than just money; they can provide access to internships, mentorship, and networking opportunities that are invaluable for career development.
Recognition of Achievement: Winning a scholarship is an achievement that recognizes your hard work, dedication, and talents. It can be a significant addition to your resume and can help you stand out in job or further education applications.
Encouragement to Excel: The process of applying for scholarships can motivate you to maintain high grades and participate in extracurricular activities, which are often criteria for scholarship awards.
Diverse Options: There are scholarships for almost every field of study, background, and talent. Whether you’re an athlete, artist, or aspiring scientist, there’s likely a scholarship that fits your profile.
Empowerment: Scholarships can empower you to pursue your educational goals without being limited by financial constraints. They can enable you to attend a school that might otherwise be out of reach financially.
Community Contribution: Some scholarships are aimed at students who demonstrate a commitment to community service. Applying for these scholarships can inspire you to give back to your community and make a positive impact.
Remember, every scholarship you win is money that you don’t have to pay back, and it’s a step towards a more secure financial future. So, it’s definitely worth the effort to apply! Good luck! 🍀
College Specific Scholarships:
Students should first look at the financial aid website for every school they are interested in to see if that school has a large scholarship unique to that school. Many colleges offer full tuition+ scholarships like the Morehead Cain (UNC-CH), the Park (NCSU), the Cheatham White (NC A&T and NCCU), Levine Scholars (UNCC), Robinson Scholars (UNC-CH and Duke). These scholarships are typically due around the same time as the early action college application deadlines. Make sure you apply for these prestigious scholarships at the beginning of your Senior or Super Senior year.
Non-College Specific Scholarships:
Then, look at the due dates for other scholarships. These scholarships may be smaller amounts but are stackable meaning you can apply for as many different ones as you like and if you win, all the proceeds can go together toward your college expenses. Many of these scholarships are due in the spring. Apply for these scholarships throughout the year with a goal to as many as possible in the 2nd semester of your Senior/Super Senior year.
Scholarships for Juniors:
While most scholarships are for students attending college the next school year, some are intended only for students in their 11th or Junior year of high school. Please note there is a separate tab at the bottom of the scholarship list for Juniors or lower grade levels.
