Recorders

3rd and 4th grade

From recorder practice to documents and school-to-home communications, check here for additional practice and classroom extension activities for 3rd & 4th grade. If you'd like to donate an extra recorder, please send to your child's teacher and it will be given to a child in need.

Purchasing a Recorder

Several local music stores have Yamaha soprano recorders with English, Baroque, or German fingering available for around $7 or less. Call before going to confirm that they have soprano recorders available. Music stores offer many recorder/music accessories. The "Recorder Express" method book may also help your child with at-home practice. Recorders can also be purchased online at Amazon, Music K-8 or West Music.

Recorders are included on classroom supply lists for grades 3 & 4.

Please check your teacher’s calendars for Specials class schedule. Keeping your recorder in your backpack once we start the recorder unit (around November for 4th grade and second semester for 3rd grade) always ensures that you’ll have it both at school for music class and at home for practice. Please label the recorder bag with the student's name.

Learning to play the recorder is an important and fun part of the music curriculum in 3rd (notes B-A-G) and 4th grade (additional notes and Recorder Karate). The recorder is an instrument that your child will be learning to play this year during music class. The recorder is considered a practice instrument should your child choose to play a wind instrument in middle school band. Learning to play recorder helps students to actively read music! I have found that a child who owns their own recorder tends to take pride in learning to play the instrument and in learning to care for it properly. Your child will also have the advantage of being able to practice at home (you can thank me later :-)
