Welcome to Music class!
Music students are active music makers. During music class students spend time singing, playing instruments, dancing, playing music games and are continuing to learn how music is an important part of their lives. Here is a brief summary of what students learn in music class:
Kindergarten
Students in Kindergarten practice keeping the steady beat and then start to learn simple rhythm patterns. They learn to play classroom percussion instruments and begin to explore the keyboards. They learn how to use their voice properly when singing and learn about the 4 voices- whisper, talk, shout, and sing. Students also explore high and low sounds with voices and instruments.
First Grade
First Graders learn about how beats are grouped into meters. They also practice matching pitch and are learning scale tones so, mi and la. They also use and identify rhythm patterns of ta and ti-ti. They expand their playing on the keyboards by playing both hands at the same time to accompany simple songs by learning about lines and spaces. Expressive qualities, string, and percussion instruments are studied as well.
Second Grade
In Second Grade, students learn rhythm vs. beat, melody, sing partner songs, and dance. They learn how to play the hand drums and play more complex rhythmic and melodic patterns. Students practice composing rhythms and melodies. A highlight is learning about the brass family and the Baroque Period in music.
