Welcome to Music class!
Music students are active music makers. During music class students spend time singing, playing instruments, dancing, playing music games and are continuing to learn how music is an important part of their lives. Here is a brief summary of what students learn in music class:
Third Grade
Students in Third Grade start to explore more independent singing with rounds. Students begin learning to read notes in the treble clef, understand various note durations, and practice writing rhythmic patterns. Third Graders are improvising melodic patterns and learning the pitches they will start to play on the recorder. They learn about World Music and explore musical styles. A highlight is learning about woodwinds and the Classical Period in music.
Fourth Grade
In Fourth Grade, students are playing recorder and continuing to read music notes in the treble clef. They expand their study of the orchestral and concert band instruments which culminates with a field trip to the North Carolina Symphony's annual Education Concert. Fourth Grade students enjoy learning to play "Recorder Karate" and have fun earning karate belts each time they learn a new song. A highlight is learning about the Romantic Period in music.
Fifth Grade
Fifth Graders focus on percussion, learning to read notes in the bass clef, music symbols, and chords. They learn to improvise short patterns and play more complex pieces on the keyboards. A Fifth Grade favorite is learning about the Impressionist Period in music and the ukulele unit.
