Hi! My name is Ms. Shepard and I am the Magnet Program Coordinator here at Moore Square! You will see me around the building taking pictures, leading tours for prospective families, and in your classrooms helping support teachers. Some of you might even recognize me from my time teaching at Brooks Museums Magnet Elementary! I enjoy traveling, reading books, and kayaking in my free time.
If you have any questions about our school's GT/AIG Basics theme or the magnet application process, please do not hesitate to email me at lshepard@wcpss.net or leave a voicemail at (919) 919-664-5737 ext. 26643.
Moore Square Gifted and Talented/AIG Basics Magnet Middle School is a collaborative learning community committed to providing a rigorous learning environment that nurtures the gifts and talents of each child while preparing them for a 21st Century global society.
This magnet program is rooted in the belief that every student has gifts and talents that are valued and nurtured through this model. Students in GT schools explore an extensive menu of electives, all which enhance the Common Core and Essential Standards, and all of which are designed to develop students’ strengths and interests. Through this structure, students have the opportunity to customize their academic programs by choosing elective courses according to their academic needs and interests. World Language instruction and expanded visual and performing arts opportunities are available.
During their three elective periods students explore new areas of interest or study a particular area in depth. This allows students time to hone their talents, or explore new areas of interest. Elective courses are offered on a yearlong, semester, and quarter basis; therefore, a student has the potential to take up to twelve different electives per year.
Students who are identified by WCPSS as Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) participate in the AIG Basics Program. AIG Basics places AIG students in core classes for language arts and/or mathematics and are grouped with other AIG identified students according to their individual qualifications. Moore Square teachers have received AIG training in order to implement differentiated instruction in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies for AIG identified students. All schools that offer the AIG basics theme offer it in conjunction with the GT magnet theme.
