A strong school library program harnesses the collective leadership and expertise of the Media and Technology Advisory Committee members to lead personalized professional learning on skills related to information literacy, digital citizenship, and digital learning.
Our Wake Forward Initiative for the 2018-19 year is to strengthen Professional Learning for growth in all grades of Technology use. This year we've tried emails, videos, and morning announcements, but still struggle with scaffolding of student skills through use of proper tools.
As the Digital Sciences Team and MTAC map our plan for preparing students for the future, we have found that students 100% of incoming WCPSS 6th graders were able to use the Google Apps, having used them in the Elementary schools with new Chromebooks. The ability to use a global tool for academic resources creates equity among our students, allowing them to be ready to create, communicate and collaborate from their first day of school.
During October Meetings with the DST/MTAC team and Digital Learning Coordinators, we found our school uses a variety of tools to assist us in learning. Incoming 6th graders are savvy to these tools, and especially those that work with Google, because their Elementary Schools have Google Chromebooks. Before creating a plan, we did two informal surveys of teachers and found they are at various levels of Google adoption, but many were interested in learning more about Google Apps for Education and related tools.
Google Apps for education provides a suite of productivity tools to help students and teachers interact seamlessly across a variety of devices. Therefore, moving forward with our 2018-19 6th graders, we will be using all Google Apps for Education tools for course management.
Surely, Google is not the only tool we use at Reedy Creek Magnet Middle School, but we are simply designating it as a baseline software to build equity among our students, allowing them to be ready to create, communicate, and collaborate confidently.
The Digital Sciences Team/Media Technology Advisory Committee will promote personalized training during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2018-2019 through Google Apps Certification and/or Kyte Training, followed by two days of specialized learning with our Digital Learning Coordinators on February 2nd and 19th. The specialized training will provide teachers with ways to integrate Google with other resources through simple one-step login.
Faculty will feel confident with their use of Google tools in the 4th quarter of the school year, and all will be ready for next year. This year of positive Professional Development will lend itself to a 2019-20 year of continuing the structures and support in place. Other possible indices include measurement of Google Certified teachers and expanded use of other Google related tools.
