Classroom School Counseling
As the school counselors we will work with classroom teachers to find times to come to classrooms and present lessons on a range of topics. Last year's topics included coping skills, mindfulness, anxiety awareness, conflict resolution, self-regulation, and transition lessons for each grade level! This is one of the best parts of the school counseling program, as it allows us to serve all students.
Small Group School Counseling
Sometimes a need for a smaller group discussion or a more targeted approach than a classroom lesson arises for students in school. Groups are formed throughout the year in response to parent/teacher referrals and observed student needs. Typically 6 weeks in duration, student participation is granted from parent permission as well as teacher and student input.
Individual School Counseling
Many students seek out the school counselor for assistance, help, and a listening ear for things going on in their life. The school counselor meets with students confidentially, only involving others when a threat of harm is discovered in the conversation. These sessions can vary in duration and frequency depending on the student's needs. The depth of the sessions can range from quick, simple check ins to set times for 20-30 minute conversations about the issues or concerns. Typically all adults involved are aware, but confidentiality is preserved for the maximum impact of the student-counselor working relationship.
Collaboration, Advocacy, Consultation, et al.
Along with the above mentioned job duties, the counselor also:
Is a part of several school based teams;
Attends all relevant district training and professional development;
Consults with other staff to make school successful for students;
Helps run clubs, school activities (such as Piper Safety Patrol), and other community supports (in conjunction with the social worker and other staff members);
Helps align private home based services with school supports;
Offers love, advice, and whatever else is needed to the entire Sandpiper school community (this includes parents and staff!).
