Students in 4th grade are provided a school recorder to use during our recorder unit in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of music instruction. The recorder is a musical instrument that has been around for around 1000 years. It is a woodwind instrument related to the flute and clarinet. During our recorder unit, students learn how to read treble staff notation and apply their knowledge to perform short songs on their recorder. It is a challenging and fun introduction to a musical instrument!
We use the Recorder Karate method in which students earn a different color belt to tie on their recorder as they demonstrate knowledge of new music skills through successfully performing a playing test on their instrument. Students can check canvas for songs to practice and opportunities to sumbit videos for playing tests!
