What School Counselors Do

What Does a School Counselor Do?

We are here to help students achieve their greatest potential academically, socially and emotionally by developing a comprehensive guidance plan based on the NC Guidance Curriculum and American School Counseling Association's (ASCA) National Model. Classroom class lessons, individual counseling, small group counseling, and parent consultation are some of the main interventions used by a School Counselor. These interventions are detailed below.

Small Group Counseling

Throughout the school year we facilitate several small groups based on need. Typically, these groups are scheduled for 6-8 weeks with no more than 6 in a group usually from the same grade level. We typically meet once a week for 30 minutes. We work with teachers to schedule a time that works best for that student. Topics include, but are not limited to:

*Emotion Management (stress, anxiety, anger)

*Family Change

*Social Skills

*Friendship

*Study Skills

*Appropriate School Behavior

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is provided to students on a short-term basis based on specific needs. Parental permission is obtained prior to any extended individual or group counseling. Students are seen by the counselor when:

*Parents request and indicate a need and desire that the counselor meet with their children

*Students request counseling

*Teachers, administrators or other school staff refer the student

Classroom Lessons

In addition to individual and group counseling, we also reach students through classroom lessons. We will cover topics including (but not limited to): bullying, feelings, friendship, stress management, test prep, conflict resolution, and middle school transition (for 5th).

Parent Consultation

We are available to meet with parents individually and/or at parent/teacher conferences. Parents can call or email to set up an appointment. We can also help with making outside referrals and provide tutoring lists for outside academic support. We are always happy to help in any way we can, so please do not hesitate to ask!
