Math News

Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms: it is about understanding.

William Paul Thurston

Please note that I have posted the scope and sequence of skills for 1st quarter only. The focus topics are the ones that will be covered each quarter. The county is working to update the skills for the remaining quarters, and I will post them as soon as I have received the final information.

1st Quarter Focus Skills:

Unit 1:

  • Collect numerical data to answer a question
  • Create frequency tables, bar graphs and line plots to represent and interpret data
  • Determine whether survey questions yield categorical or numerical data

Unit 2:

  • Multiply or divide to solve multiplicative comparison word problems using models or equations
  • Solve two step word problems for all of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Use estimation as a strategy to check for reasonableness of solutions
  • Use letters to represent unknown quantities in equations
  • Find all factor pairs for numbers up to 50 in order to: recognize whole numbers as multiples of their factors, determine prime and composite numbers, and determine whole number multiples of one digit numbers
  • Find areas of rectilinear figures with known side lengths
  • Solve problems with a varying area and fixed perimeter AND with a varying perimeter and fixed area.

Unit 3:

  • Explain the base 10 system with numbers up to 100,000 ( a digit in one place represent 10 times as much as it represents in the place to the right)
  • Read and write multi-digit whole numbers up to 100,000 using numerals, number names and expanded notation
  • Compare two multi-digit numbers up to 100,000 based on the value of the digits and using symbols
  • Add and subtract multi-digit numbers up to 100,000
  • Solve two step word problems with multi-digit numbers by using estimation to check reasonableness and representing problems with equations using letters to represent unknown quantities

2nd Quarter Focus Skills:

Unit 4:

  • Develop Multiplication and Division Strategies

Unit 5:

  • Extend the Understanding of Fractions

3rd Quarter Focus Skills:

Unit 6:

  • Making Connections to Decimal Notation

Unit 7:

  • Understanding Operations of Fractions and Decimals

Unit 8:

  • Applying Geometric Concepts

4th Quarter Focus Skills:

Unit 8:

  • Applying Geometric Concepts (continued)

Unit 9:

  • Using Place Value to Understand Metric Measurement

Unit 10:

  • EOG Review and Testing
