What is mCLASS? mCLASS is an assessment tool that measures the development of literacy skills that are foundations to reading. The skills tested in kindergarten include: Letter Naming Fluency (LNF), Phonemic Segmentation Fluency (PSF), Nonsense World Fluency (NWF), Word Reading Fluency (WRF). After the end of each assessment period (beginning, middle, and end of year), parents/caregivers will receive a Home Connect letter attached to your child's report card. This letter will include a large amount of information about your child's reading strengths and areas for improvement.
Report cards will be sent home four times a year. WCPSS uses standards-based grading for report cards. This is different from the letter-based grading scale (as pictured to the right). Instead of receiving a letter your child will receive a numerical grade (4, 3, 2, or 1). Teacher comments will be provided along with the standards-based grades. The parent/caregiver will review the information, keep the report card, sign the envelope provided and indicate whether or not they would like a parent-teacher conference. Please review the chart below to understand the grading system. You may also find information on Wake County's website.
